Deadly Tractor-trailer Accident in North Charlotte Claims Lives of Several Cows, Driver Unharmed

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (DDN) – On Tuesday morning, a tractor-trailer that was transporting cows overturned on a busy interstate ramp in north Charlotte, resulting in the deaths of multiple cows.

The accident occurred at approximately 12:22 a.m. near Exit 38 on the ramp from I-85 South to I-77.

The tractor-trailer came to a stop on its passenger side, trapping around 40 cows inside.

The firefighters managed to cut the trailer apart and rescue the cows. According to a WBTV cameraman, some of the animals seemed to have died, while others were still alive. It is not known exactly how many people died. The truck driver was unharmed.

Cattle wranglers and tow trucks were called in, as were the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police, Highway Patrol, and transportation officials. It is assumed that at least three extra trailers were brought in to transport the cows from the site of the accident.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care and Control was also contacted for assistance.

Last month, a sign was put up that proclaimed the ramp a “high crash zone.” The ramp has a severe left-hand bend.

According to state transportation officials, the ramp was reopened at approximately 1:30 p.m.
