BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (DDN) – The Berkeley County Coroner has identified two women who perished in an early Monday morning crash on Highway 17-Alternate.
Coroner Darnell Hartwell reported that Brianna Barnum, 28, of Summerville, and Miriam Frausto, 36, of North Charleston, died in the crash.
Barnum died at the site, while Frausto succumbed to her injuries at a nearby hospital, according to Hartwell.
Master Trooper William Bennett says the accident occurred around 3:35 a.m.
Barnum was driving a 2018 Volkswagen while Frausto was driving a 2013 Buick Enclave. According to Hartwell, no one else was in either vehicle.
A third vehicle, a 2015 GMC SUV, was involved, but its driver was not injured.
According to troopers, Barnum and the driver of the GMC were both going south on Highway 17A. Frausto was heading north on the highway but driving in the southbound lanes.
As a result, Frausto’s and Barnum’s automobiles collided head-on, and the driver of the GMC struck Barnum’s car from behind.
The coroner’s office was notified of the crash at about 4:34 a.m.
On Monday morning, Highway 17A between Longstreet Street and Kate Lane was closed due to a crash. The road reopened before 7 a.m.
Berkeley County EMS, the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, the South Carolina Highway Patrol, and Pine Ridge Fire and Rescue all responded.
