Dear Abby: My girlfriend thinks I’m cheating with my much-younger hiking buddy

Greetings, Abby

I’m a man of sixty-four. I have four grandchildren and two daughters, and I am unmarried. For the past five years, my daughter and a young woman named Sarah have been hiking together. I treat her as if she were a member of my family and my third daughter. The husband of Sarah’s spouse is not a hiker. Her spouse and my daughters welcome our friendship and are pleased that I’ve met someone with whom I can go hiking.

Toni, the woman I’ve been seeing, is about my age. I proposed that we live together for the rest of our lives six months ago. Sarah and my daughters were pleased for me. I must be romantically involved with Sarah, Toni said after she turned down my proposal.

Sarah turned away from me when I brought it up to her. She may believe that she meddled in my relationship with Toni. Though not as much as before, we are still friends. Should I ask Sarah why she cut off contact with me? This makes me sad, and I regret a little. I should have kept Toni’s words to myself. A HIKE IN COLORADO

Greetings, hiker

You did nothing wrong, in my opinion, by telling Sarah what Toni had hinted at. You are free to ask your trekking companion anything you want. Unless you inquire, you won’t know why your friendly five-year friendship with her cooled.

I want to know if you and Toni are still together after she turned down your proposal. If so, do you intend to keep going even though you know that you won’t be with her in the future unless you find a male hiking partner?
