Local parents and police enforcement are deeply concerned about the several charges against a middle school counselor in Delaware County for allegedly possessing child pornography. According to 6abc, Kevin Siegel, who has been a fixture in educational counseling at Northley Middle School for more than 20 years, is facing 17 counts after an investigation that was sparked by a Yahoo tip.
According to information uncovered by court documents, Siegel was arrested after allegedly sending incriminating images to a secondary email address. On October 24, when law enforcement carried out a search warrant, they discovered explicit photographs on several devices, even though Siegel told the officers it was “a moment of weakness” and an act of sheer foolishness that he claimed he did not understand. Siegel was unable to provide any justification for his more than two-decade transformation from a reputable teacher to someone interested in such illegal materials, according to NBC Philadelphia.
According to NBC Philadelphia’s coverage, the Penn-Delco School District quickly disassociated itself from Siegel’s actions, stating that the alleged crimes did not take place on school property and did not involve any district students. Law enforcement officials also confirmed this, and the superintendent included it in a note to parents.
One parent said, “They should have sent something out the day it happened, and I’m sure they knew before, but they let it go,” regretting the lack of immediate disclosure even as the district and law enforcement sought to mitigate potential risks without jeopardizing the ongoing investigation. The district’s solicitor partially supported this stance. Despite the school district’s assurances of transparency regarding the events that have transpired, some parents feel left in the dark about Siegel’s initial leave of absence and subsequent charges.
Following the arrest, Delaware County District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer emphasized the importance of protecting minors from predators and encouraged anybody who believes Siegel has had inappropriate contact with him to call his office. According to 6abc, Siegel is awaiting a preliminary hearing on December 5th and has been granted $100,000 bond.
