orchestrated a flag retirement ceremony to bid a dignified farewell to thousands of American flags deemed no longer serviceable. According to a social media post by the department, the community turned in these flags, which have flown across Denton County and now were to be honorably retired in alignment with the US Flag Code.
The ceremony featured several community leaders and organizations, showing a shared respect for the symbol of American freedom. Pastor Jon Betancourth of Fellowship of the Parks blessed the flags while retired US Army Colonel Peter W. Malik sang the National Anthem. Local Scout groups, the Justin Fire Department, and the Young Men’s Service League also participated, highlighting the community’s ongoing commitment to the tradition of flag retirement.
With roots stretching back to 1937, following an American Legion resolution, the preferred means to respectfully dispose of a flag has always been burning. The Flag Code explains that this act is done under the auspices of the flag representing a living country and being considered a living thing.
