Detroit airport travel tips ahead of holiday travel season

(CBS Detroit)Holiday visitors are being given advice on how to minimize delays at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) as it approaches its busiest time of year.

The first step is to make sure you have adequate time to travel from your front door to your gate. Depending on how far you live from DTW, how many people you’re going with, and any accommodations you might need along the trip, that can vary for each passenger.

“Last year at this time, we had the longest wait times—25 minutes for standard and 8 minutes for precheck,” stated Reggie Stephens, the Federal Security Director for Michigan at the TSA.

Making or missing your Thanksgiving flight could depend on those minutes. During the busiest travel season of the year, TSA advises spending more time at the airport rather than at home.

“We advise arriving two hours early for domestic flights. “Be three hours early for international flights,” Stephens advised.

Particularly when traveling with kids, every second matters. A Canadian family shared with us how they handle foreign borders in particular.

“We arrive the night before, traveling from Canada. In this manner, we arrive here with plenty of time and avoid any problems at the border. My spouse and I assign tasks. He completes all of the passports, tickets, and other paperwork, making sure he has everything organized. After that, I handle all the packing, clothing, snacks, and other things,” Canadian tourist Nicole Golder stated.

One traveler claims that even while traveling alone can simplify things, she still uses technology to remain ahead of the game.

“I use the Delta app to check in. I make my own luggage tags when I visit. I try to fly alone as much as I can. Suzette Sullivan, a traveler, stated, “I just try to get here two hours in advance to make sure I’m ready for the flight.”

Try entering through the Westin Hotel entrance at the end of departure drop-offs if you’re flying out of the McNamara terminal and the security lines appear to be lengthy. You can pass through the hotel’s security checkpoint without actually staying there. If you’re rushing to your gate, you might be able to save a few minutes by using the little-known hotel entrance.
