(CBS DETROIT) Tuesday was a momentous day for Detroit Cass Tech High School students, professors, and alumni as the school held a parade in downtown Detroit to commemorate its first football state victory since 2016.
The Technicians defeated Hudsonville 42–20 over Thanksgiving weekend to win the MHSAA Division 1 state championship. Cass Tech is third overall and hasn’t won a state title since 2016. Since 2011, the Technicians have advanced to five state finals.
“It means a lot,” Alex Graham, a senior cornerback for Cass Tech, said. “We haven’t won a state championship in eight years, so to bring that back and get rewarded and everything feels amazing.”
The parade on Tuesday was a huge hit with everyone at Spirit Plaza. In addition to faculty, alumni, and family members, about 500 students came.
There were placards supporting the football team and lots of cheers throughout downtown Detroit as the championship football team, band, and cheerleaders arrived on a float down Woodward.
Graham, who committed to USC, said he and his team put in a lot of effort to win the Division 1 state football championship.
“Hard work, and everybody has to be on the same page and be into the goal, and once that happened, that’s how we won it,” Graham added.
Melia Howard, the deputy mayor of Detroit, together with other municipal officials and Cass Tech administrators, planned the parade, with the majority of them displaying their Cass Tech pride.
Graham offered some guidance to Cass Tech’s upcoming football players.
“Really, just keep going, one step at a time; take it slowly; trust the process,” he stated.
