(CBS DETROIT)Mary Sheffield, the president of the Detroit City Council, declared her intention to run for mayor and stated that she is prepared to become the city’s next top leader.
Judge Greg Mathis was among the area business and community leaders who spoke at an event hosted in Sheffield on Tuesday night. She would be the first female mayor of Detroit if elected.
Following Mayor Mike Duggan’s announcement that he would not run for reelection but would instead enter an independent bid in Michigan’s 2026 governor contest, Sheffield entered the mayoral race. The city came out of its historic bankruptcy in December 2014, the same year Mike Duggan assumed mayor.
In November 2013, Sheffield, who represents the city’s fifth district, was first elected to the city council.
According to Sheffield’s campaign motto, “Together We Can, Together We Will,” she is committed to boosting the city’s economy and education, lowering property taxes, lowering crime, supplying more affordable housing, and fostering small business growth.
