Detroit Election Worker Hospitalized After Crash During Ballot Transport, Vote Integrity Maintained

An election worker in Detroit has been hospitalized following a single-vehicle crash that occurred while the individual was in the process of delivering ballots last night. The incident, taking place at the intersection of W. Grand Boulevard and Linwood Street, led to non-life-threatening injuries for the worker, as reported by CBS News. Following the accident, Detroit police secured the area and awaited the arrival of additional election workers to retrieve the ballots.

Detroit authorities indicated that there was a slight delay in ballot processing due to the crash. In an effort to provide assurance on the integrity of the election materials, Detroit Police stressed that the ballots were safely enclosed in sealed boxes, which they believe to have not been compromised by the accident, according to FOX 2 Detroit. The sealed transfer case containing the ballots and a memory card with stored data were both recovered and have since been delivered to the Department of Elections, as described by Detroit City Clerk Janice Winfrey.

Local election officials quickly addressed concerns about possible delays in the vote count. Detroit elections director George Azzouz reassured the public, explaining that only one container of ballots, holding fewer than 300, was in the vehicle during the crash.

The crash occurred around 10 p.m., and the injured worker was promptly taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. “The worker was driving from the city clerk’s New Center election headquarters, where signatures on absentee ballots are compared to the signature on voter registration cards, to the absentee counting room at Huntington Place, where absentee ballots are unsealed and counted,” the Detroit Free Press reported. Detroit Police Department Deputy Chief Franklin Hayes confirmed that the ballots have been picked up promptly after the crash.
