(CBS DETROIT)For almost a century, the Detroit Goodfellows have been associated with spreading Christmas cheer.
According to the nonprofit’s motto, “No Kiddie Without a Christmas,” the Detroit Goodfellows are distributing over 26,000 gift boxes to underprivileged families in collaboration with the city of Detroit.
“This is very important to me, having been a recipient as a kid of a Goodfellows box, and those kids who are less fortunate than others deserve a very merry Christmas as well, so it is perfect for us to be here,” Raphael Washington, the Sheriff of Wayne County, stated.
Gift boxes were sent to hundreds of families in need this holiday season as thousands of them went through an assembly line on Monday. For underprivileged kids aged 4 to 13, the holiday gift boxes include toys, clothes, books, candy, and other items. These cities include Detroit, Hamtramck, Highland Park, Harper Woods, Ecorse, Redford, and River Rouge.
According to Detroit Goodfellows, two out of every three students in Detroit’s public schools are given a gift box.
“It’s amazing,” Jordan Mulka, executive director of Detroit Goodfellows, remarked. “The families adore it. The children adore it. I get approached by adults who say, “I had a Goodfellows box as a child.”
It’s about showing appreciation and offering assistance, which is something that Detroit municipal officials are glad to provide.
“It doesn’t get better than this,” Todd Bettison, the acting chief of police in Detroit, stated. “I know Detroit police officers who reflect back to when they were children, and they were recipients, and now they get a chance to give back.”
