Detroit Launches “Rides to Care” Program Providing Free Transportation for Expectant Mothers and Infant Caregivers

For expectant mothers and caregivers with infants in Detroit, your commute to medical appointments was much more accessible. The city has launched “Rides to Care,” a new program providing free round-trip transportation to healthcare visits for pregnant women and those taking care of infants up to a year old.According to an announcement by theCity of Detroit, Mayor Mike Duggan, and Chief Public Health Officer Denise Fair Razo announced the initiative, which also gained the City Council’s nod of approval.

Eliminating one primary hurdle to accessing healthcare, the scheme operates Monday through Saturday, catering not only to the city of Detroit but also extending its coverage area to include a five-mile radius beyond city limits. Mayor Duggan emphasized the importance of the program in a statement obtained by thecity’s news outlet, “With Rides to Care there is no reason to miss a vital medical appointment, because free roundtrip transportation to every doctor’s office visit is now an automatic benefit to them as a Detroiter.”

The partnership with Uber Health provides a more systematic approach to scheduling and keeping medical appointments, especially during the critical developmental phases of pregnancy and early childhood. Anastasia Lewis, a beneficiary of a similar service called SisterFriends, shared with thecity’s news release, “It has helped me go to my appointments and it made sure I was on-time. Sometimes I get there early and when I am done early, I am able to go right home and not have to wait.”

Detroit Health Department’s Medical Director, Dr. Claudia Richardson, highlights the significance of maintaining health during pregnancy, telling thecity’s news release, “Maintaining good health during pregnancy is the most precious gift anyone can give their unborn child.” The program covers prenatal, postpartum, and newborn pediatric visits. Rides can be booked by calling the dedicated call center at 313-876-0000 during specified hours or scheduling up to a week in advance for convenience.
