Detroit Lifestyle Blogger and Hijabi Model Tells All in ‘Unashamed’ Memoir
Divorce and anger led Leah Vernon, a Detroit-based fashion blogger and lifestyle model, to write Unashamed: Musings of a Fat, Black Muslim.
“Put trauma and pain into art, ”she says during a conversation with Ryan Patrick Hooper from CultureShift. “If you’ve been with someone for 10 years, been married for eight years, and then dissolve right in front of your eyes, just say, ‘What is life?'”
To filter her emotions, she turned to her power weapon: writing.
But instead of putting it right on their social media – – That has almost 50,000 followers on Instagram – – Vernon took her blogger status and elevated it to author.

“Shameless: Thoughts of a fat, black, Muslim “ published October 15 by Beacon Press, is a “gritty and raw” seat in the front row of Vernon’s life. In the “conversation reading” she describes her relationship to religion and identity.
“It’s definitely a coming-of-age story. You will go through how Leah V. became Leah V, ”she says. “How I started influencing social media, my mom and our relationship, my relationship with hijab and being a black Muslim girl in the ghetto and how people treated me.”
