(CBS DETROIT) On Wednesday, Mayor Mike Duggan of Detroit declared his intention to run for governor of Michigan as an independent in 2026.
Currently in his third four-year term, Duggan, a Democrat, is the second-longest-serving mayor of Detroit, after Coleman Young.
“Neither the Republican nor Democratic parties are running me for governor. In an announcement, Duggan declared, “I’m running to be your governor.” “Too frequently, we witness the political squabbling and foolishness that previously hampered Detroit in Michigan today. Instead of finding answers, the current system drives people to take sides. That needs to change. In order to advance Michigan, I plan to unite Democrats, Republicans, Independents, and our youth, many of whom have given up on our political system.
Duggan declared in November that he will not run for a fourth term. The city came out of its historic bankruptcy in December 2014, the same year Mike Duggan assumed mayor.
“My first priority in 2025 will be my duties as Mayor, but I wanted to start statewide conversations now and then spend full-time in 2026 visiting neighbors in every corner of this state,” Duggan stated. “I welcome anyone across the state who is tired of the politics of conflict to invite me into your community to have serious, important conversations about our state’s future.”
