Detroit Mother Fatally Shot While Trying to Defuse Argument in Double Shooting

On Detroit’s east side, a mother was shot and murdered while attempting to diffuse a fight between two well-known acquaintances, one of whom is her son.

The double shooting happened in the 18000 block of Runyon Street on Wednesday, September 4, at 8:10 p.m.

“We had a shots fired alert at 8:10 p.m.,” Detroit police Commander John Svec stated. “Officers arrived within two minutes where two victims were discovered and immediately began rendering aid before they both were conveyed to local hospitals where the adult is currently fatal, and the other one is in critical condition.”

According to officials, the gunman and the son were acquainted and had a fight before the gunman produced a pistol.

The gunman opened fire, killing the mother and critically wounding the son as she attempted to step in and defuse the situation.

“You got two people hanging out, and all of a sudden, they get into an argument, it escalates, and we got two people shot; it’s just ridiculous,” Svec stated.

Authorities report that the gunman has not been taken into custody and that they are still looking for him.

“This is an isolated incident, and it was just an argument that went too far,” Svec stated.
