DDN – A Detroit police officer on his way home from work was killed in a hit-and-run accident on the city’s east side on Sunday, according to officials. Officer Cameron Richardson had been with the department for just over a year, and police characterized him as a family guy with two kids, as well as a military veteran.
“Today, the Detroit Police Department lost Officer Cameron Richardson, who served one year with the Department,” the department said in a post on X. “Officer Richardson was killed in a car accident while off-duty.”
Interim Chief Todd Bettison informed reporters that the city had lost “one of Detroit’s finest.”
“He was a good officer, a fine officer who served with distinction,” Bettison said, emphasizing that Richardson will be remembered. “We’re going to wrap our arms totally around this family.”
According to authorities, Richardson was driving home from work northbound on Hoover Street at Greiner Street.
Witnesses informed authorities that a white van turned left on Hoover Street, in front of Richardson’s Jeep Wrangler.
Officers arrived on the site shortly after midnight and discovered Richardson’s Jeep had rolled over in the incident.
However, the second vehicle had fled the scene.
During the news conference, Bettison thanked the Michigan State Police for locating the white van a short distance from the accident.
According to police, all van occupants were detained, and a 28-year-old male has been designated as a person of interest. However, that person has yet to be located.
The Detroit Police Department did not immediately reply to Fox News Digital’s request for additional information.
“We’ve worked nonstop since the tragedy happened. “We’ve executed search warrants,” Bettison stated. “We’ve identified who was in that white van. We know who the driver is. We’re asking the driver to give themselves in.”
