Detroit Teen Charged with Second-Degree Murder in Shooting That Killed 14-Year-Old, Wounded Mother

A Detroit teen is being held responsible for a harrowing incident that resulted in the death of a 14-year-old boy and the wounding of his mother. The boy, aged 15, is facing charges of second-degree murder and felony firearm, as announced by the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office. In the wake of the tragic event that transpired last Thursday, the community is grappling to understand how a disagreement between children spiraled into violence.

The altercation began around 6 p.m., with the initial argument involving two young children, ages 6 and 8. According to reports by

, the situation swiftly escalated, with teens and adults soon becoming embroiled in the dispute. It was during this tense scene on Seward Street and Second Avenue in Detroit that the accused teen reportedly fired multiple shots.

Detroit police officers responded to the scene, finding the younger teen suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

CBS News Detroit

reported that the injured boy was taken to an area hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on Monday. The mother, 32, was also shot during the altercation and was privately taken to a hospital for treatment.

While the 15-year-old has not been charged as an adult, the charges carry an adult designation, which allows the judge to potentially sentence him as a juvenile or an adult or opt for a blended sentence. This would include imposing an adult sentence later should the juvenile fail to be rehabilitated. A preliminary examination for the teen is scheduled for Nov. 19.
