A 16-year-old boy is in custody following a violent altercation that led to the shooting of a 14-year-old teen and the injury of the assailant’s own mother in Detroit, authorities reported. The event occurred yesterday just before 6 p.m., on the 800 block of Delaware Street, as relayed by

. According to Assistant Police Chief Charles Fitzgerald, the 14-year-old victim is in “extremely critical condition” after being shot in the head, and the suspect’s mother suffered a gunshot wound to the arm.
The confrontation began with an argument between two children, ages 6 and 8.

reported that a 13-year-old family member attempted to break up the fight when the 8-year-old went to his house and returned with a 14-year-old family member and their mother. “When they get back to the area, there’s the 13-year-old and 14-year-old kind of jawing back and forth,” Fitzgerald said. A 16-year-old, who is a cousin to the 13-year-old, joined the fray and escalated the situation by producing a firearm and opening fire, despite his mother’s attempt to intervene.
