With an emphasis on Detroit’s Eastern Market, the Toyota Mobility Foundation just revealed the Sustainable Cities Challenge semi-finalists. The chosen semi-finalists have the potential to completely transform the way that clean freight is handled in urban environments, according to the City of Detroit.
Ten proposals were selected from among the 72 submissions that vied for a share of the $3 million prize that would go to Detroit because they had the potential to reduce the region’s reliance on fossil fuels and simplify freight operations. The BizFleets data aggregation system, Automotus’ AI solar cameras, and Civilized Cycles’ electric freight bikes are all aiming to provide the Eastern Market more environmentally friendly options. A $50,000 implementation grant was given to each semi-finalist so they may polish their ideas. The Innovator Academy will provide the extra instruction, which should help them turn their ideas into practical solutions.
Depending on how the semi-finalists test their ideas, the challenge, which includes three stages and lasts for three years, may receive more money in Q2 2025.
