It’s encouraging to see practical initiatives gaining traction close by as the Bay Area struggles with housing issues. A collaboration between Douglas County, Arapahoe County, and Family Tree has emerged as a champion for homeless families. In the past, the Douglas County GOALS program has provided families in need with up to nine months of support; the package includes housing, job resources, and mental health care.

Thanks to a $1 million federal funding supported by US Representative Jason Crow, the initiative is expected to expand. With this expansion, five additional Douglas County families will get funding promptly beginning in December 2024. The Douglas County Homeless Initiative was founded by Commissioner Abe Laydon, who was quoted by Douglas County as saying, “In Douglas County, we do our best work in partnership with others.” Thanksgiving, he said, is a special time to celebrate this partnership, emphasizing that “housing plus wrap-around services gets to the root of why someone is experiencing homelessness and gets them on the path to long-term self-sufficiency.”

Counties and organizations working together is an example that others could follow. Not a temporary fix, but a thorough strategy meant to ensure long-term stability. The GOALS program is based on the fundamental idea of giving families a comprehensive support network to enable them to become self-sufficient.
