Downtown Duluth Gears Up for Return of Christmas City of the North Parade This Friday

When the Christmas City of the North Parade returns this Friday, November 22, downtown Duluth will be a flurry of holiday activity. Official information from the City of Duluth states that the procession will begin at 6:30 p.m. in front of Fitger’s, a historic building at the intersection of 6th Avenue East and Superior Street. The parade promises to be a display of lights, music, and celebratory floats as it marches along Superior Street and ends at 4th Avenue West.

It’s important to note that parade units will line up on London Road between 10th and 14th Avenues East starting at 4 p.m. for people who intend to attend the yearly event. Beginning at 4 p.m., a number of road restrictions will be implemented in advance, including the closure of London Road between 10th and 14th Avenues East. Beginning at 5:30 p.m., Superior Street will be closed from 8th Avenue East to 12th Avenue East. At approximately 5:45 p.m., the closure will extend to 5th Avenue West. In order to make it easy to identify the marching bands and dance groups that will disembark from the parade route on 4th Avenue West, buses for parade participants will station themselves on the upper side of London Road between 14th and 17th Avenues East.

Westbound traffic from London Road at 14th Avenue East and from Superior Street at 12th Avenue East will be rerouted to westbound 3rd Street, and eastbound traffic from Superior Street will be rerouted at 6th Avenue West to eastbound 2nd Street. Residents and visitors traveling to and from the area should be prepared for these detours. The city has arranged for free parking after 5 p.m. at a number of ramps and lots, such as the Civic Center Ramp and the Fourth Avenue Auto Park, to improve accessibility in Downtown. Additionally, parking meters will stop charging after 5:30 p.m., notwithstanding Superior Street’s stringent no parking restriction along the parade route.

Due to the anticipated surge in foot traffic, drivers are urged to pay attention to pedestrians and parade participants and to obey the no parking signs placed around the event area. Because certain cars parked in designated lots, such the Fitger’s Ramp and Pickwick parking lots, won’t be allowed to leave until the parade celebrations are over, drivers will need to exercise extra caution. In order to guarantee a comfortable conclusion to the evening’s festivities, the city expects regular traffic conditions to return at approximately 8:30 p.m.
