The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) has reopened the SW 3rd & Alder SmartPark garage, giving holiday shoppers in Portland something to rejoice about. The garage, which reopened on Monday, has more than 400 parking spots to handle the anticipated rise in retail activity, catering to both new and well-known establishments in the city center.
The garage, which is ideally situated to serve customers of the Portland Winter Ice Rink and the soon-to-open James Beard Public Market, now has first-floor retail spaces that add to the lively downtown atmosphere. The reopening, according to a statement acquired by the City of Portland from Mayor Ted Wheeler, represents the city’s commitment to “aid in downtown revitalization” and harness the “ongoing recovery and prosperity of our central city.”
The revitalization of downtown dynamic is expected to be aided by new eateries like Side Hustle and innovative pop-up stores run by the Portland Metro Chamber. The “woman owned paranormal investigators” who are now selling coffee and ice cream sandwiches, SINister Coffee & Creamery, said they will open this Wednesday. According to the City of Portland website, the city appears to be positioning the SmartPark garage as a key component of this economic redevelopment as downtown gets ready for the holiday frenzy.
The Portland Bureau of Transportation was informed by Prosper Portland Interim Executive Director Shea Flaherty Betin that the garage’s prompt reopening was “perfectly positioned to connect visitors with the heart of downtown’s vibrant holiday shopping, dining, and entertainment.” According to the City of Portland’s official website, PBOT Director Millicent Williams applauded the garage’s staging, which included expanding first-floor food services just in time for the holiday shopping season. She also highlighted the recent consumer enhancements.
Since August 2023, when it was temporarily closed, PBOT has made major safety enhancements. Incidents like auto prowls have been much reduced thanks to actions like hiring a new vendor for security services. Customers will experience aesthetic and technology enhancements in addition to safety improvements, such as newly painted elevator lobbies and updated payment systems that are compatible with downtown on-street parking.
In the upcoming months, PBOT intends to roll out these updated pay stations at other SmartPark locations, continuing its efforts to keep a clean and safe environment through consistent storefront and sidewalk cleaning. Additionally, the bureau is receptive to new concepts for revitalizing the garage’s top levels, possibly turning them into venues for community and cultural events.
The 3rd & Alder garage is a perfect example of Portland’s SmartPark program, which takes pleasure in providing reasonably priced and easily accessible parking options that promote the city’s economic activities. The program is still committed to offering over 4,000 public parking spots, fostering the relationship between the general public and Portland’s metropolitan attractions.
