Drier, hotter weather moves in over the weekend

Drier air will provide a break in monsoon moisture across most of New Mexico through the weekend. Rainfall is expected to increase again early next week.

Heavy rain over burn scars caused destructive flash flooding in Ruidoso this afternoon. Flash Flood Warnings remained in effect until 3:30 PM. This afternoon, other areas of New Mexico were also under a Flash Flood Warning. Showers and storms will end tonight, with drier air moving in.

Storms will form again along the central mountain chain and in the northern mountains early Friday afternoon. They will then move east and northeast throughout the afternoon and evening, but they will not last long once they leave the higher elevations. Rainfall will be significantly lower than what we have seen today. High temperatures will reach near or above average levels for this time of year.

Even drier air will arrive in New Mexico on Saturday. Only a few spotty showers will develop across the northern mountain peaks. Temperatures will be higher than average across the state. Some monsoon moisture will return to the state on Sunday, with a chance of storms in southern New Mexico, but the majority of the state will remain dry. Temperatures will stay high.

More monsoon moisture will arrive in the state early next week, bringing scattered showers and thunderstorms to the western half of New Mexico. Northwest New Mexico has received little monsoon moisture this season, but that will change by next Wednesday. Meanwhile, eastern New Mexico will remain dry.
