NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla.(DDN) – Before a guy was accused of driving his truck off the road in New Smyrna Beach over the weekend, hitting a couple and killing a lady, police said he was previously wanted for damaging people’s property and driving away.
Police said the car was accused of hitting mailboxes on the beach before crossing the North Causeway bridge and arriving at the deadly accident scene.
They reported that once he arrived on the mainland, he pulled off the road in his Ford F250, drove onto the sidewalk, and struck a couple walking from behind. Investigators said the couple was headed to the Images Art Festival downtown on Canal Street when they were hit.
The motorist remained at the scene following the accident, and authorities are investigating if criminal charges would be made.
“We’re still investigating that crash and will decide whether any criminal charges are warranted,” stated Interim Chief Chris Kirk. “That part of the investigation will take a little bit of time as we execute search warrants and conduct analysis.”
Kevin Buchans observed the horrifying accident.
“I’m terrified to death. “I’m watching everything and anything around me,” he stated. “He hit these two pedestrians, went through the telephone pole, ricocheted off of five oak trees before he stopped in front of one across the street.”
Buchans also claimed he was within a few feet away from getting hit. “I was standing two and a half feet in front of that oak tree, trying to decide which way I was going to run. I just made up my mind in a split second, flung my bicycle, and rolled,” he explained.
The couple’s identity has not been revealed, but police have established that they lived part-time in New Smyrna Beach and Altamonte Springs. The husband was hurt, but he has already been released from hospital.
