Driver Crashes into Emeryville Building, Traffic Light Down at San Pablo and 40th Street

Yesterday, a motorist struck a structure near the intersection of San Pablo Avenue and 40th Street, causing a tremor in Emeryville. Around 1:00 PM, the Emeryville Police Department reported receiving several 911 calls describing the incident. The driver, a guy in his 60s, was taken out of the car by onlookers, who also provided first aid until help could arrive. The motorist was sent to a nearby hospital with moderate injuries. There were no additional injuries from this collision.

At the busy intersection, a traffic light was rendered inoperable due to the collision. Officials advise drivers to exercise additional caution when driving through, but they have not yet determined when the repairs will be completed. Following a prompt assessment by city inspectors, the building in question—which houses the Black and White Liquor Store—has been deemed safe to continue operating. Eyewitness reports indicate that the driver may have had a medical issue, which caused the abrupt acceleration and subsequent collision, according to the Emeryville Police Department.

Several agencies worked together to organize the accident reaction. In order to maintain public safety and structural integrity, the Alameda County Fire Department, PG&E, and Emeryville’s building inspectors collaborated to manage the event and its aftermath.
