Driver Killed After Crashing Into Fence, Vehicle Bursts Into Flames in SLO County

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Cali. (DDN) – Lucio Ornelas Avina of Paso Robles was identified as the victim of a single-vehicle crash and fire in rural San Luis Obispo County last Thursday.

On Monday afternoon, February 3, Ornelas Avina, 34, was driving a 2005 Ford Escape northbound on Creston Road, south of Camp 8 Road, at an unsafe speed, according to a California Highway Patrol news release.

According to the CHP, about 4:20 p.m., Ornelas Avina drove off the road and lost control of his vehicle, colliding into an oil pipe fence.

According to the CHP Traffic Incident Information Page, the crash occurred near the B&E Vineyard on 10000 Creston Road, north of Highway 41. A fatal crash has been reported near the SLO County winery. A vehicle accident was reported near B&E Vineyard in San Luis Obispo County.

Witnesses said that the vehicle “quickly became fully engulfed in flames,” according to the announcement.

Officers arrived on the site at about 4:36 p.m. and reported the vehicle was “stuck on top of a 6-foot-tall fence,” according to an emergency radio transmission.

Ornelas Avina, unable to exit the vehicle, was discovered dead at the scene shortly after. The SLO County coroner later identified the victim and contacted the next of kin.

It is also unknown whether drink or drugs were involved. The crash is being investigated further by the CHP Templeton Area Office.
