, the holiday on Thursday, November 28, and Friday, November 29, means most City offices, including City Hall, will be closed to the public during these days.

For those concerned about waste collection, the Solid Waste Management Department Administrative Office will also be taking a break on these dates. It’s important to note that Thursday’s curbside collections for garbage, recycling, and yard waste will now happen on Friday, November 29, pushing Friday’s services to Monday, December 2. The Waste Disposal and Recycling Center, alongside the Yard Waste and Household Hazardous Waste Centers, will be closed on Thursday and Saturday but will continue to operate normally on Friday. Residents are encouraged to sign up for collection day alerts to quickly receive reminders for holiday service changes.

Recreational services provided by Durham Parks and Recreation (DPR) are also adapting to the festive season. DPR will shut down its administrative office and all its facilities on the holiday, having already closed at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, November 27. If you plan to spend the holidays downtown, you’ll find parking a little bit easier. The Park Durham Customer Service Center will not be available on Thanksgiving and the following day. Lastly, for Durham residents looking to make service requests over the holiday period, Durham One Call lays out multiple options while their office remains closed on Thursday, November 28, and Friday, November 29. Service requests can be made online, by using their smartphone app, via text to 919-813-6315, or by leaving a message at 919-560-1200; these will be processed the next business day. For water and sewer emergencies, the Water Management Department’s after-hours emergency number at 919-560-4344 will be available to dispatch crews.
