The arrival of Hani’s Bakery and Caf made the East Village a little sweeter. Under the direction of Shilpa Uskokovic, senior food editor at Bon App et, and her husband Miro Uskokovic, a former pastry chef at Gramercy Tavern, Hani’s pledges to pay tribute to American desserts with a global flair. According to Eaterreports, the bakery has gained recognition for its distinctive products, which include chocolate-chunk cookies and a PB and J cake that are evocative of Miro’s well-liked dishes at Gramercy Tavern.
Icons from the culinary world, including Rose Levy Berenbaum, attended the friends and family opening, which took place in a former Dunkin’ Donuts site on Cooper Square. Miro told Eater, “The goal with Hani’s is to carry on that tradition and celebrate the diversity of American baking, [with] nods to who we are.” Both proprietors, Shilpa from India and Miro from Serbia, have foreign ancestry, and their baking is a synthesis of their experiences and the American baking customs they have grown to adore.
In addition to being the realization of their common goals, the bakery is a memorial to Miro’s late mother, who told Eater that the unstable political situation in the Balkans in the 1990s dashed his own hopes of starting a bakery. In the upcoming weeks, Hani’s intends to broaden its menu beyond desserts by adding sandwich options including a BEC with hot cilantro sauce and a dilly tuna salad.
Grubstreet pointed out that the Uskokovics want their bakery to have a relaxed vibe. According to Shilpa, consumers are looking for things that taste nice, feel familiar, and have a little element of surprise. This is reflected in their menu, which will feature savory pastries like broccoli-cheddar scones and a hearty masala chai that Shilpa and her parents created in addition to their cakes.
From the business’s inception to overcoming the difficulties of a worldwide pandemic while writing their business plan, the couple’s quest to create Hani’s started when they were foreign students at the Culinary Institute of America. Despite having grown up abroad, Shilpa and Miro both like the nostalgic appeal of American desserts. Shilpa muses, “There is something strangely nostalgic about American desserts,” as stated by Grubstreet. Even though none of us was raised here, we still yearn for these things.
New Yorkers are invited to experience the common global past that Miro and Shilpa bring to an all-American tradition when Hani’s Bakery and Caf formally opens its doors tomorrow. In the center of Manhattan, Hani’s is a monument to the couple’s commitment as merchants of comfort and sweetness with its wide variety of baked products and multicultural embellishments.
