Tragedy struck in Edmond when a mother and her son were charged with felony child neglect following the accidental shooting death of 12-year-old Tyler Taffe in September at their home. According toKFOR, the incident occurred in the early hours of September 28, and the victim was later identified as the son of Kershena Cotton, who contacted authorities shortly after the event. Cotton’s 18-year-old son, Logan Walker, shared a room with Taffe during visits to the home. Walker has stated to police that he had suggested Taffe to climb into his bed to avoid sleeping on the floor.
As the night unfolded, Walker was reportedly playing video games with headphones on when he heard his name called out twice, followed by a “loud boom.” “He said he heard Taffe call his name but did not acknowledge it, and then heard him say his name again before he heard a ‘loud boom,'” as per an article byOKC FOX. After discovering Taffe unresponsive, Walker proceeded to inform his mother of the situation. The gun found at the scene was reported to belong to Cotton, who admitted to police she had taken her sons to a gun range earlier that month but insisted no ammunition was kept in the house.
The Edmond Police Department, upon arrival at the scene, found Taffe with a gunshot wound. Despite CPR efforts until medical assistance arrived, Taffe was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation suggested that Taffe had accidentally shot himself, yet the presence of a firearm within the child’s reach has led to the current charges against Cotton and her son. A statement obtained byOKC FOXindicated that Cotton had told investigators that “they did not have any ammunition in her home and they did bring ammunition home after the range.”
After the shooting, an interview with the Edmond Police Department revealed that Cotton knew about the gunshot. She admitted that she had told Walker to put the firearm in a gun safe, but she didn t check to make sure he did. This mistake has now led to serious charges, adding even more grief to a family already in mourning.
