Elderly Woman Perishes, Man Rescued in Early Morning Kelso House Fire

An old woman was declared dead after a house fire in Kelso early last Friday morning, while an elderly man was saved from the same fire. Officers from Kelso Police responded to an emergency in the 200 block of South 9th Avenue shortly before six in the morning. As flames tore through the property’s upper, the two policemen braved the smoke coming from the front door upon arrival, according to KPTV.

They found an old man on a couch in the living room and quickly transported him to safety while performing the rescue in the middle of the consuming fire. Although firefighters were able to contain the fire in about 20 minutes and “had the fire fully extinguished by 8 a.m.,” they discovered an older woman dead outside her bedroom at the rear of the house, according to KATU. Interestingly, several residents who were asleep upstairs when the fire started were able to leave the house safely.

The elderly woman’s identify has not yet been made public until her next of kin have been notified.
