Elevated Lead Levels Detected in Riverview Drinking Water Prompting Action and Transparency in Metro Detroit

A concerning finding was that the drinking water in a few homes in Riverview, a Metro Detroit suburb, had high levels of lead. The City of Riverview said Wednesday that lead levels in four of the thirty properties that were tested above the “action level” set by the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE). According to a CBS News story, “the goal for lead in drinking water is 0 (parts ber billion); there is no safe level of lead in the blood,” which is highlighted by this guideline, even though it is not health-based.

However, since exposure to lead pipes and plumbing within individual homes is the main source of lead in drinking water, these test findings do not necessarily indicate that all households are impacted. According to CickOnDetroit, Riverview municipal officials advise running tap water before using it in order to remove any stagnant water that may contain more lead. In addition, the city recommends using a certified lead-reducing filter and cold tap water for food and drink preparation because hot water is thought to dissolve more lead.

Concern has been accompanied by a stronger drive for transparency, as water agencies in Metro Detroit are required to warn residents of any lead lines within 30 days and to publish inventory of service line materials by October 16. According to Planet Detroit, this increased disclosure requirement was a result of water systems’ attempts to comply with federal and state drinking water regulations.
