Elizabeth City Man Receives 12-Year Sentence for Fentanyl Distribution and Gun Crimes

Karem Felton, a 31-year-old resident of Elizabeth City, was found guilty of distributing fentanyl and possessing a handgun and was given a twelve-year jail sentence. This sentencing comes after a Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Office raid on Felton’s residence on May 19, 2023, following an allegation of gunfire the day before.

Officers found a reality of violent drug trafficking that affects many neighborhoods when they seized numerous firearms and a significant quantity of cash throughout their investigation. One of the most important aspects of our work is to disrupt drug trafficking in our communities. The FBI and our local partners are making every effort to remove hazardous drugs and their dealers off our streets. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Robert M. DeWitt, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in North Carolina, said, “This case is another great example of law enforcement working together to make our communities safer.”

Sheriff Tommy Wooten of Pasquotank County commended the cooperation of several agencies in this case. “I want to thank my Deputies at the Pasquotank County Sheriff s Office, Elizabeth City Police Department, Federal Bureau of Investigations and the U.S. Attorney s Office for the great work that has been done to combat the drug and violent crime issues we face on a daily basis,” Wooten told the United States Attorney’s Office.

Felton was connected to a previous shooting incident on May 18 when Elizabeth City Police discovered shot casings from a.300 caliber rifle and used surveillance film to identify Felton as firing at a car from a BMW he had previously been observed driving. According to information provided by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the following search of Felton’s home turned up many firearms, including a 7.62 x 39mm and a.300 Blackout pistol, along with fentanyl, cocaine, and a total of $12,158 in cash stashed in different places throughout the property.
