Evgeny Svechnikov nears another opportunity with Detroit Red Wings

Detroit – Is that Evgeny Svechnikov’s last chance with the Red Wings?

Maybe, maybe not. Svechnikov was transferred to the taxi team from Grand Rapids earlier this week, and with the Wings looking for crime, there may be a chance Svechnikov could get a significant, expanded NHL opportunity.

With 38 games remaining in this shortened season, it is possible that the Wings will give Svechnikov the opportunity to show that he is (or not) an NHL player.

With several wings injured against Florida on Friday, there is a possibility that Svechnikov will make his season debut.

Svechnikov is looking for an opportunity. If he gets it, said coach Jeff Blashill, it’s up to Svechnikov to take advantage of it.

“He’s got to get an opportunity first, and right now he’s looking inside out. He’s here as a deep,” said Blashill. “If he has the opportunity, he played OK. What you have to do to stay is play great and make a huge impact.

“You normally have eight to 12 minutes, which is what you usually get when someone calls you, and those eight to 12 minutes are really what you need to be good at. Then, the next night, you might go from eight to ten (minutes) and from 10 to 12, from 12 to 14, and so on. Some people go backwards and get a really good opportunity and go from 12 to eight (minutes) and then they’re not here.

“We want guys who help us win and have a big impact on the game help us win.”

Svechnikov, 24, is a 6-foot-3, 208-pound winger who scored 20 goals in his rookie pro season (2016-17) at Grand Rapids but has not come close since.

In 20 career games with the Wings spanning three seasons, Svechnikov has two goals and two assists.

“He’s the guy who has really good one-on-one offensive skills,” said Blashill. “He’s a great kid, works extremely hard and just has to put it together in team play.

“We’ll see if he gets the opportunity. If he does, can he run with it? “

Injuries were one of the reasons Svechnikov failed to repeat his offense from his rookie season at Grand Rapids.

In particular, a torn ACL that kept Svechnikov off the ice for the entire 2018-19 season. Svechnikov returned last season and had 11 goals and 25 points in 51 games at Grand Rapids (but no points in four games with the Wings).

“All I know is that he has been badly injured and it takes a toll on you and your development,” said Blashill. “That doesn’t mean it will destroy him. That makes it harder and he has to climb over those obstacles – and he had a lot of them. “

Defense structure

Given the wings’ offensive battle, it would be natural to see a lot of wings lagging behind on points to potentially cheat defensively and possibly spark their offensive chances.

But Blashill reiterated that the Wings need to keep their defensive structure as tight as they have lately and that cheating for insult would only hurt the team all around.

“It’s important that we keep the structure, that we stick with it and continue to be a tough team to play against and that we continue to be good defensively,” said Blashill. “This is how you win in this league. The teams that usually test are the teams that win and that’s what we want to do here to win over the long term.

“In the meantime, you can’t push for insult. You can’t get frustrated and cheat for insult. If you do these two things, you won’t get more points and give up a lot more. That’s not a recipe for success. Our guys understand the recipe for success and we have to stick with it.

“Sometimes not seeing good results is not the easiest thing in life, but we have to do it.”

Injury update

The wings are still stolen from the striker group.

The latest to maybe miss a game is Vladislav Namestnikovwho did not practice Thursday and Blashill called him “questionable” for playing against Florida.

As for Darren Helm (Lower body), was practicing helmet but Blashill wasn’t sure Helm was available after missing out on the last three games.

Blashill also ruled out Tyler Bertuzzi (Upper body) for the two games against Florida. Bertuzzi has missed the last eight games.
