DDN – The ex-boyfriend of a Warren woman who went missing last week has been detained in connection with her case, police said. Investigators believe he is the major suspect.
According to her relatives, Ashley Elkins, 30, has not been seen or heard from since January 2. They have been asking for her safe return and for the public’s assistance in obtaining answers. According to the family, authorities suspect her ex-boyfriend murdered her.
Roseville and Warren police officers arrested her ex-boyfriend in Genessee County on Wednesday night. According to internet documents, he’s been charged with lying to a peace officer. 7 News Detroit is not naming him at this time because he has not been properly charged. He is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday morning.
“The family is devastated.” We’re glad to hear about the arrest. But tonight, we met with the Roseville and Warren police departments, and they told us that based on the evidence, Ashley was murdered by his ex-boyfriend at his home and that this most likely happened late (last) Thursday, early Friday,” Elkins’ uncle Maurice Morton told us Wednesday night. “Hearing that is devastating.”
Warren lady Ashley Elkins’ uncle speaks about her disappearance. Morton stated that the family is supporting each other throughout this time.
“We were hopeful that she would be found, but getting the news tonight is just devastating,” Morton told me.
Elkins’ last known location was Roseville, according to police and family. Multiple law enforcement agencies spent hours on Tuesday investigating the ex-boyfriend’s Roseville home at the Hampton Court Apartments. Also on Wednesday, investigators stated that there is a “strong possibility” of foul play in the case, which is “likely occurring” within the apartment complex.
Officials said they used a search warrant to recover “significant evidence, including forensics.” They found Elkins’ silver Chevrolet Malibu along 13 Mile Road and Little Mack Avenue. Officials also took a trash can from the Hampton Court Apartments on Pinehurst Street near Frazho Road, south of 11 Mile Road.
“They said based on the evidence found in the flat, which was substantial and I guess was blood evidence. And there looked to be evidence inside that dumpster, which they carted away and are still analyzing. And therefore we know that more evidence will emerge at some point,” Morton said.
According to family members, Elkins left her Warren home on Knox Avenue at 8:30 a.m. on January 2 to run errands. Her younger sister was the last person to see her. Elkins’ mother, Monika, stopped by the house but had just missed her.
Ashley Elkins’ family stopped communicating with her after conversing with her earlier in the day.
“She did not say anything, which surprised me, so I told her, ‘Well, you know, be careful. Observe your surroundings. “Nothing from Ashley after that,” Monika Elkins informed us on Monday. Loved ones utilized the iPhone Find My function to look for her. Her phone’s last known location was the Roseville apartment complex, just a few hours after she was last spotted leaving home.
“We knew he had been trying to reach out to her; whether he wanted to get back with her, I’m not sure,” Morton told us on Monday. ‘A very pleasant individual.’ Family describes missing mother of two.
However, when loved ones drove by the apartment, they reported no evidence of Ashley Elkins, the man, or her vehicle.
“She has not contacted anyone. We’re talking about a mother with two children, ages ten and seven, who adores her children and her family. She is always in communication with her family, so not being in contact, not responding in five days, or reaching out is unusual,” Morton previously stated.
The family also stated that the man she previously dated had not been seen in days. 7 News Detroit went to the apartment complex on Monday and knocked on the door. No one responded. Ashley Elkins is a hair stylist who works from her home. According to her family, the man showed up at her house after posing as a client.
“It was him, and (her sisters) were in the house quiet,” Monika Elkins previously told us. “She told her sisters to stay quiet. He knocked on the front and side doors and then departed. And here we are, days later, and she is gone.”
According to Warren police, Ashley Elkins’ family reported her missing on January 3. Investigators confirmed her last known location as Roseville and stated that they have scoured many surrounding businesses for footage and are employing digital forensics in the case to try to hunt her down.
“I understand they work very hard, but their family expects them to work harder. “We understand that every minute counts,” Morton had stated. Ashley Elkins is characterized as a Black woman who stands between 5 feet 2 and 5 feet 3 and weighs 150 pounds.
