Explorer of the Seas Arrives in Miami After Facing Severe Weather and Passenger Injury off Tenerife Coast

Passengers onboard the Royal Caribbean’s Explorer of the Seas finally docked in Miami yesterday, concluding what became an unexpected high-seas drama due to turbulent weather. The cruise, which originated from Barcelona, Spain on Nov. 2, faced severe disruptions after encountering a powerful wind gust near Tenerife, Spain. As a result, the originally scheduled arrival in Miami last Thursday was delayed,NBC Miamireports.

The chaotic scenes unfolded on the initial night, with the ship listing dangerously to one side. Passengers captured footage that showed tables and bottles crashing onto the floor, showcasing the severity of the situation. “Dining plates, glasses, everything started tumbling down off the tables. People were running out of the dinner room. It was a bit of chaos at that time,” passenger Sofie Dubois told7News.

Amidst the disruption, the ship’s captain took immediate action, instructing passengers to stay in their cabins until everyone could be accounted for, reassuring guests that despite the severity, such occurrences are akin to an airplane hitting turbulence. Meanwhile, due to the injuries sustained by one passenger amidst the chaos, a detour was made to Las Palmas, Spain for urgent medical disembarkation, a Royal Caribbean spokesperson conveyed.

Despite the intimidating conditions, following their safe return, survivors of the experience commended the crew and the captain for their handling of the crisis. “He kept us posted on weather and all kind of details so you felt secure,” Dubois expressed gratitude in her interview with7News. This ordeal reminds of a similar incident back in October, where passengers on a different cruise line also contended with rough seas due to Hurricane Milton in the Gulf of Mexico.
