The states with the highest LGBTQ+ populations in the US for 2024, according to Saturday Night Science, are Oregon and Delaware.
Summary of research on the most LGBTQ-friendly states in the United States. We used Saturday Night Science to study the states that have the highest proportion of LGBT adults for the year 2024. The information is sourced from the UCLA School of Law Williams Institute. They provide a breakdown of the percentage of gay adults by state. The most recent data is from December 2023.
- Oregon has the highest rate of LGBT adults in the United States. Approximately 7.8% of adults in Oregon identify as gay.
- Mississippi has the lowest rate of LGBT adults in the United States. 4.1% of adults in Mississippi identify as gay.
We have previously examined the most LGBTQ+ friendly cities in America, and it is not surprising that San Francisco was ranked as the most LGBTQ+ friendly city. It was surprising that only about 2% of households in San Francisco reported themselves as gay to the Census.
If the city with the highest concentration of gay people in the country has a relatively small gay population, then the gay population across America must be even smaller. According to the Census, only about 0.5% of households consist of two males or two females.
Which states have the highest number of gay residents? States that are more liberal and located on the East and West coasts tend to have a higher percentage of LGBTQ+ individuals. And as you might expect, there are fewer gay people in the Upper Midwest and the South.
The lower half of the overall list (25-50) is not surprising, as it is mostly made up of Midwestern states and states in the South. It is likely that fewer people in these areas report living in same-sex households, so the percentage of the population that is gay is probably similar across all these states. But what is the reason behind the top states? Why isn’t California ranked as the number one state?
