Summary of research on African American cities in Wyoming. We used Saturday Night Science to analyze the most recent Census data from Wyoming. Our goal was to find out which cities in Wyoming have the highest percentage of Black residents. These are the findings from our analysis:

  • According to the most recent Census data, Cheyenne has the highest number of African American residents in Wyoming.
  • Cheyenne is 2.58% Black.
  • The least African American city in Wyoming is Green River.
  • Green River is 0.0% Black.
  • Wyoming is 0.8% Black.

The Black community in America has been growing rapidly over the past decade.

There are about 42 million people who identify as Black or African American living in the United States. They make up 12% of the total population. Based on the latest American Community Survey, there are 4,488 Black people in Wyoming, which makes up 0.8% of the total population of Wyoming.

Method to Find Wyoming Cities With Largest Black Population

We continue to have confidence in the reliability of data, particularly from the Census. That’s where we went to find out the racial breakdown in Wyoming.

The most recent data available is from the 2018-2022 American Community Survey conducted by the US Census. We specifically examined table B03002, which provides information on Hispanic or Latino origin by race. These are the names of the categories defined by the Census:

  • Hispanic or Latino
  • White alone*
  • Black or African American alone*
  • American Indian and Alaska Native alone*
  • Asian alone*
  • Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone*
  • Some other race alone*
  • Two or more races*

The specific column we were interested in was the number of individuals who identified themselves as Black or African American.

We focused our analysis on towns in Wyoming that have a population of more than 6,000 people, excluding CDPs. We were left with 16 cities. Next, we determined the proportion of residents who identify as Black or African American. The percentages range from 2.6% to 0.0%.

Finally, we determined the ranking of each city based on the percentage of its Black population. A higher score indicates a higher proportion of Black residents, while a lower score indicates a lower proportion. Cheyenne had the highest population of Black residents, while Green River had the lowest number of African American residents. This article has been revised for the year 2024. We have ranked the cities in Wyoming based on their African American population for the tenth time.
