The Federal Aviation Administration has opened an investigation into the events that led to an American Airlines flight leaving Honolulu and beginning a “expedited climb” to avoid hilly areas. After American Airlines Flight 298 missed a necessary turn departing Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, air traffic control told it to climb quickly, according to an FAA release that KHON2 cited.
The jet made it safely to Los Angeles, landing around five hours after the near-miss. To make things more complicated, a different story from American Airlines that was shared with KHON2 implies that the crew did, in fact, ask for and obtain permission to make a right turn while adhering to instructions. Safety of passengers and crew was the airline’s top priority. “There was no Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (EGPWS) alert as there were no issues with terrain clearance based on the trajectory of the aircraft,” the spokesperson said.
As reported by Hawaii News Now, audio that was made public shows an air traffic controller giving the tense order, “Number 298 turn right, expedite your climb through terrain and then turn right through 120.” In order to assure safe passage away from the island’s peaks, a substantial right turn is a typical component of the departure procedure, according to FlightAware data.
It was estimated that Flight 298 had departed the mountains by roughly 1,500 feet. Disparities between the flight route and the reported directions may be discovered during the FAA’s investigation into the incident. American Airlines has not yet responded to inquiries about the situation.
