JACKSONVILLE, Fla.(DDN) – The Florida Highway Patrol said that a semi-driver was killed Thursday morning after his tractor-trailer rear-ended another and caught fire on I-10 westbound near Cecil Commerce Parkway.
Troopers say a 45-year-old New York man was driving a semi on I-10 East at 5:45 a.m. when he slowed for traffic near Cecil Commerce Parkway.
Another semi coming up behind him in the same lane did not slow down and collided with his trailer, setting fire.
Troopers said the driver of the semi that caught fire was unable to exit the vehicle and perished on the scene. The FHP has not provided any identifying information about the driver who died.
The New York motorist, who was wearing a seat belt, was unharmed, according to troopers.
All eastbound lanes of I-10 near Cecil Commerce Parkway were stopped for several hours Thursday while troopers investigated and cleared the scene.
Traffic was diverted to State Road 23, and drivers were advised to expect delays and avoid the area if possible.
FHP crews worked for several hours to remove the scene and reopen the road.
