Fatal Crash After Speeding Driver Evades Deputy and Rolls Vehicle in Columbia County

CALEDONIA, Wisc. (DDN) – A man faces numerous felony counts after speeding past a Wisconsin cop and rolling his vehicle during a high-speed chase that killed one passenger.

According to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, deputies stated that speed and alcohol were factors in the incident.

Around 3:25 p.m. on February 1, a deputy in a fully marked squad car was patrolling I-90/94 westbound near the I-39 interchange in the Town of Caledonia.

A car traveling westbound allegedly passed the deputy at a very high rate of speed.’ The deputy attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle apparently failed to pull over and accelerated to nearly 100 mph while weaving across traffic.

About 45 seconds later, the car exited onto Highway 33. The vehicle flipped over while attempting to handle the departure ramp due to its high speed, ejecting two passengers. The vehicle had four occupants.

As emergency responders arrived, the deputy attempted to save lives at the scene of the crash.

One of the ejected passengers was pronounced deceased on the site. Two additional passengers were transported to nearby hospitals with life-threatening injuries.

The driver was also hospitalized for serious injuries. Deputies said the 22-year-old Sparta driver will face multiple felony charges.

The inquiry into the incident is underway.
