Fatal Single-Vehicle Crash on Highway 95 Claims One Life from John Day, Leaves Another Injured

A tragic incident unfolded over the weekend on Highway 95 near milepost 8.5 in Malheur County, where a single-vehicle crash claimed a life and left another person severely injured. According to

Oregon State Police

, the accident occurred late Saturday night, November 9, and involved a Hyundai Sonata.

The OSP’s initial investigation revealed that at around 10:04 p.m., the vehicle, driven by 46-year-old Nicholas James Alexander of John Day, veered off the road for reasons not yet determined, and, rolled several times before coming to a halt. Both Alexander and his passenger, 40-year-old Destiny Dawn Burril, also from John Day, were ejected from the car as a result of the crash, and, experts speculate the ejection was likely because they were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the incident.

Alexander, sadly, did not survive and was pronounced dead at the scene. Burril, on the other hand, sustained serious injuries and was quickly airlifted to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention. The aftermath of the crash had repercussions on the flow of traffic, as Highway 95 experienced a closure that lasted roughly an hour to accommodate the ongoing investigation by the authorities.

Assisting with the response to the crash were multiple agencies, including the Malheur County Sheriff’s Office, Marsing Fire and Rescue, and the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT). While the investigation is still ongoing to understand the causative factors behind the accident, this event serves as another grim reminder of the sudden and unpredictable nature of road incidents. ODOT continues to encourage drivers to exercise caution, and, buckle up every time they get behind the wheel.
