Father of Two Killed in Senseless Shooting Near Warren Motel Days Before Christmas

A gunshot that occurred close to a motel in Warren resulted in the death of a father of two children.

However, the authorities believe that the events that led up to the gunfire began earlier at a different place, even though that is where the victim passed away.

To save enough for Christmas, Brandon Zaner, who was 38 years old at the time, was working at Bray’z Hamburgers, where he was flipping burgers.

The decision to go across the street was made by him on Saturday evening after ten o’clock.

The burger joint can be found at the intersection of Dequindre and 9-Mile, which is on the boundary between Hazel Park and Warren.

“So the victim was at the gas station getting a cup of coffee – he and the suspect got involved in some sort of argument and both went their separate ways,” according to Warren Police Department Lieutenant John Gajewski.

The suspect, identified by the police as Al Williams, 45, allegedly returned and began a confrontation with Zaner. After the altercation, Williams allegedly shot Zaner in the chest, resulting in Zaner’s death.

“All indications are they had no prior contact – never met each other, never knew each other, truly senseless and random,” according to Gajewski.

“Not that there’s ever any good time to lose a parent but a couple of days before Christmas,” according to Gajewski.

Williams was taken into custody by law enforcement around twelve hours later at a hotel in the city. While he is incarcerated, he is being charged with murder in the second degree. The investigators are currently seeking to identify a possible motive.

“No robbery, nothing was taken, no allegation, indication, or evidence supporting any sort of theft-type motive, robbery-type motive argument where one person made the very serious and conscious to introduce a weapon and now is facing charges appropriate for his actions,” according to Gajewski.
