Federal and Local Authorities Unite to Teach Cyber Safety to LAUSD Students Amid Online Threats

Federal and local officials are collaborating to teach LAUSD students about cyber safety as part of a deliberate effort to protect young brains in the digital realm. The Department of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), LAUSD, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office will all contribute to the development of a program that educates people about the dangers that exist online, with a focus on online sexual exploitation, which continues to endanger the innocence of children. “Nothing is more important than protecting and uplifting our children,” U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada stated in a statement that KTLA was able to receive.

In order to provide age-appropriate cyber safety instruction, specialist HSI agents will work directly with students throughout the vast LAUSD ecosystem, the second-largest school district in the country. Following the launch of Know2Protect, a DHS-led public awareness campaign, in April, HSI’s Project iGuardian is poised to equip the youth with the necessary information and tools to confront the digital threats head-on.

The partnership’s planned rigorous information dissemination further demonstrates the significance of this endeavor. The U.S. Attorney’s Office, Central District of California was informed by Alfonzo Webb, senior director of Climate Culture for LAUSD, that “By working together, we will provide age-appropriate presentations, resources, and guidance to help foster safer online environments for students.”

The Department of Justice’s Project Safe Childhood and Project iGuardian’s combined capabilities highlight a holistic approach to counteracting the growing menace of child exploitation. According to a formal press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, each entity contributes its unique set of expertise, as demonstrated by the enthusiastic coordination of PSC Coordinators Catharine A. Richmond and Kellye M. Ng from the Department of Justice, who led the MOU and will serve as the USAO’s main facilitators. In order to safeguard and empower the flexible brains that traverse our increasingly interconnected world, federal, state, and local resources will be mobilized.
