DDN – They followed the footprints in the snow and discovered the man alive but unresponsive.

According to the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office, one Michigan man is doing okay after slamming into a tree in Porter Township last week and disappearing.

Authorities were reportedly dispatched to the crash site on Friday night, but no occupants were found.

They came across tracks in the snow while exploring the region. According to a sheriff’s office statement, they followed them across a field and some woods before discovering the 64-year-old Lawton man partially under a bush near swampland.

Responders were eventually able to awaken the individual, who stated that he could not feel his legs. EMS later treated him.

“The weather at the time was around 20 degrees, with occasional heavy snow and high winds,” the sheriff’s office stated.

“If the deputies had not located the footprints and followed them, it is likely that the subject would have succumbed to hypothermia at the edge of the swamp.”

The man reportedly approached a resident’s home and said he was cold and would walk to a friend’s house.

People are urged not to leave their automobiles in an emergency and to contact for help. The sheriff’s office advised individuals to store supplies such as blankets, water, food, and flashlights in their automobiles in case of an emergency.
