Jaime Heredia, a former Marine, received a 10-year sentence yesterday for a 2022 crash that killed a couple from Fishers, Indiana. This was a devastating legal outcome. Grant and Ashley Lansdell lost their lives in the terrible incident on July 11, 2022, when Heredia, operating a government vehicle, collided with their vehicle. Heredia was moving at 69 miles per hour in a zone where a 40 mph speed limit was in effect, according to WRTV.
Additionally, an investigation revealed that Heredia had been drinking prior to the collision, and WTHR reported that he was traveling at an astounding 78 miles per hour only seconds before the hit. In a heinous turn of events, Heredia requested that another Marine take alcohol containers out of his car before the cops showed up. Marion County Superior Court Judge Angela Dow Davis cited this as an aggravating circumstance. “I’m sad and disappointed that a Marine, who I normally hold in the highest respect, would have covered up information and act so carelessly and recklessly,” Ashley’s cousin Jacqueline Tredmore said in her testimony.
In October, Heredia, who was charged with two counts of reckless homicide, agreed to a plea deal, according to WISH-TV. For the first count, he received a five-year sentence, one year of which was spent on probation, and he was also mandated to complete an alcohol treatment program. In addition to further probationary requirements and credit for time served, the second count resulted in an additional five years.
Ashley, a kindergarten teacher at Fall Creek Elementary School, and musician Grant Lansdell were remembered for the deep vacuum they left behind. Bret Lansdell, Grant’s brother, said in a statement obtained by WTHR, “You took a son, a brother, a husband, a father, an uncle, a teacher, a comedian, a mentor, and a friend to countless others, and in many ways, the worst thing he did was to take his music away from the world.”
Heredia begged the court for mercy and the prospect of home detention during the court procedures so that he could be with his pregnant wife and two children in South Carolina. According to WISH-TV, Heredia pleaded and then apologized to the Lansdell family, but his defense said he will fight the punishment.
