CBS Detroit, Hillsdale County, Mich.A former sergeant in the Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Office entered a guilty plea in relation to the 2021 assault of an inmate.
The Michigan Attorney General’s office has charged Ronald Leggitt, 44, of Marshall, with one count of misconduct in office and one count of aggravated assault.
Leggitt, a supervisor, is accused by state officials of assaulting the female inmate on December 16, 2021.
According to officials, jail employees were informed that the woman had resisted arrest and had persisted in doing so while being booked. Leggitt allegedly used aerosol subject restraint to assault the victim six times, spraying her face with the substance. According to officials, the woman was restrained by a chest restraint and wrist and ankle restraints during the incident.
Attorney General Dana Nessel issued a statement saying, “With this conviction, Mr. Leggitt has been stripped of his ability to serve as a police officer in Michigan, preventing him from harming others who would have been under his authority.” “My Department remains committed to holding accountable those who abuse their positions.”
Leggitt’s sentencing date is set for January 29, 2025.
