Former Nassau County Deputy Charged with Misconduct and Battery After Use of Excessive Force in Callahan

A former Nassau County Sheriff’s Office deputy is facing charges following an incident involving the use of excessive force. Dale Hutcherson, aged 40, was arrested last Thursday after a video contradicted his report concerning an August incident in Callahan, where he encountered an intoxicated person lying in the street.

According toNews4JAX, the Nassau County Sheriff s Department began an investigation last month which revealed that Hutcherson exerted more force than was necessary, as there was no physical altercation, or imminent danger present. Sheriff Bill Leeper expressed his disappointment, stating, We are extremely disappointed to have to arrest one of our own deputies, but we have an obligation to hold all of our employees accountable when they break the law and violate the public’s trust.

Details fromFirst Coast Newsindicate that Hutcherson was charged with official misconduct, a felony, and a misdemeanor battery. The investigation, which began in October regarding the August incident, found Hutcherson’s actions to be an example of official misconduct.

Further examination by the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office, as reported byWOKV, revealed that the body-worn camera footage showed the intoxicated man walking away toward another deputy who was attempting to lead him to safety. This contradicted Hutcherson’s report stating that the individual had attempted to break free, leading to the leg sweep. In light of these findings, Hutcherson was swiftly terminated from his position and faced legal repercussions.

This type of behavior is unacceptable and goes against everything we stand for at the Nassau County Sheriff s Office,” Sheriff Leeper said in a news release, underscoring the strict policies and training on the use of force expected to be adhered to by deputies without exception. Hutcherson, who had been with the Nassau County Sheriff s Office for just about two years before this incident, is currently awaiting trial for his actions.
