Former Nevada Assembly Speaker John Hambrick Dies at 79, Remembered for Dedication to Public Service

John Hambrick, 79, the former speaker of the Nevada Assembly, died on Wednesday. He was a Republican who represented Assembly District 2, which included portions of Summerlin and west Las Vegas, as Speaker during the 2016 legislative session. According to News3LV, he was well-known for his commitment to combating human trafficking and assisting marginalized groups.

Outside of politics, John Hambrick had a successful career that included positions as an agent for the Immigration and Naturalization Service, a special agent for the U.S. Secret Service, and an investigator for the Federal Inspector General. Colleagues of all parties praised him, and he was highly respected. “Former Speaker John Hambrick was the best of us, gracious, kind, and humble,” Assemblywoman Melissa Hardy said in a News3LV article, while Assembly Speaker Steve Yeager recalled him for his empathy.

Hambrick’s former campaign manager, Nathan Emens, told KTNV that the cause of death was cancer, expressing a common sorrow by saying, “There’s no better person I’ve known in the Legislature.” Hambrick, who used to love portraying Santa Claus in the White House, made a lasting impact by working on children’s concerns and participating in youth sports leagues.

John Hambrick had both successes and setbacks during his political career. After a contentious 2012 campaign strategy, he was elected Assembly Speaker in 2014 after a Republican landslide. He dealt with colleagues including Assemblywoman Michele Fiore, who was facing IRS liens, and handled complicated situations during his time there. Both parties praised his final legislative session in 2019, demonstrating the bipartisan respect he gained. Until her death that year, Hambrick was frequently spotted at political gatherings with his wife, Nancy.
