Former Pendleton Police Officer Sentenced to 87 Months for Child Pornography Possession

A former police officer from Pendleton, Oregon, has been handed an 87-month federal prison sentence for possessing child pornography, as reported on the Umatilla Indian Reservation. The former officer, 57-year-old Cameron Jacob Sheoships, was also sentenced to five years of supervised release after his term, according to a

Department of Justice press release

.

Information regarding the case reveals that the investigation began in August 2022, when the FBI received a tip-off leading them to suspect child pornography activity traced back to Sheoships. Further insights gained from Google and Twitter accounts quickly associated with him as investigators worked to lay out the breadth of his offenses systematically. In May of the following year, the investigation deepened with the execution of federal search warrants at Sheoships’ residence, which led to the discovery of explicit photos and videos on his cellphone.

Sheoships, who served as a tribal police officer, faced charges brought by a federal grand jury indictment on June 13, 2023. These charges related to his possession of child pornography, a plea he admitted to in court on April 24, which included a pattern enhancement for the repeated sexual abuse of a minor that started as far back as the 1990s.

Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon, Cassady A. Adams, who worked in conjunction with the FBI, was leading the prosecution. The case reflects a serious breach of trust by a law enforcement official, casting a shadow on the integrity of officials meant to safeguard the community.
