Federal charges have been filed against two Georgia men who are suspected of trying to con an 80-year-old man in Mississippi out of $50,000.
They are being held without bond. In federal court, both men are currently accused of plotting to commit wire fraud.
The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office took Nooruddin Bhai Nasruddin, 52, and Chaturali Alauda Roy, 69, into custody on September 5.
State allegations of false pretense, exploitation of a vulnerable adult, and conspiracy to commit false pretense led to the initial arrests of Nasruddin and Roy.
Following their appearance in federal court on Monday morning, they were placed under detention pending additional hearings.
The two men will stay in federal custody until they are charged with a crime, having renounced their rights to preliminary and detention hearings.
The elderly victim was called by someone impersonating as an Amazon salesperson, which is how the scam started.
The caller made up the story that the victim’s accounts had been hacked following an alleged $4,000 purchase.
Scammers gave the man instructions over the phone to take almost all of his money out of the bank, put it in a cardboard box, and get ready for a “federal agent” to pick it up. After growing suspicious, the victim took the money to the sheriff’s department.

When Nasruddin and Roy came to get the money box, deputies took them into custody. The men may spend up to 30 years in jail for the federal wire fraud conspiracy and up to 25 years in prison for the state crimes if found guilty.
