FTC Clamps Down on Fake Online Reviews with Penalties Up to $51,744 per Violation

The landscape of online shopping has been marred by an increasing trend of fake and misleading reviews, posing a significant challenge for both consumers and small businesses alike. According to a recent report by

ABC15

, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is now actively fighting against this deceitful practice by cracking down on bogus online endorsements, penalizing the purchase of inauthentic positive or negative reviews, insider testimonials, and suppressing genuine customer feedback.

To deter these fraudulent activities, the FTC has imposed a hefty fine of up to $51,744 for each violation found. “Fake reviews have been a problem for a number of years but it really kind of escalated in recent years,” Teresa Murray, Consumer Watchdog Director for the US Public Interest Research Group, told

ABC15

. She further emphasized that these regulatory actions send “a strong message to companies that use deceptive tactics to get customers.”

This issue affects both online shoppers and local businesses. Coty Youtsey, a local business owner, expressed his concerns to the

Carswell Family Foundation

, saying he has seen thousands of fake reviews targeting competing businesses, misleading customers and causing confusion. Despite efforts to identify and report these fake reviews, Youtsey admitted, “It’s an uphill battle. And we’ve gotten pretty good at it, but it can happen a lot more often than we realize, and sometimes we don’t realize it until it’s too late in some cases.”

Fake reviews undermine consumer trust and threaten local businesses. Despite their vigilance, business owners like Youtsey struggle to keep up with fraudulent tactics. Experts like Murray advise shoppers to take their time, check for duplicate reviews, look for an unusual number of four- and five-star ratings, and read comments that match the product. This careful approach helps protect both consumers and the marketplace from false endorsements.
